History & Mission

In 1943, the Housing Authority of Maricopa County (HAMC) was established to address the shortage of decent, safe, and sanitary housing in Maricopa County.  Over the past 80 years, the HAMC has provided affordable housing options and connections to services to low-income, vulnerable, and underserved populations.

Our mission is to improve the quality of life of families and strengthen communities by developing and sustaining affordable housing programs; and to become a leading Housing Authority by exemplifying best practices, offering innovative affordable housing programs, and expanding accessibility throughout Maricopa County.

The HAMC is governed by a Board of Commissioners (Board). Each member of the elected Maricopa County Board of Supervisors appoints one member to the Board, and the Board appoints at least one but not more than two eligible resident commission members (“Resident Commissioners”) who must be: A.) in good standing, and B.) either a Housing Authority housing resident (Category 1) or a Housing Authority Rental Assistance recipient (Category 2). A vacancy on the BOC of a Supervisor-appointed Commissioner shall be filled with a replacement appointed by the Supervisor of the district who initially made the appointment and approved by the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors.

The Board is responsible for HAMC policy and provides general oversight and administrative direction for the organization. In addition, the Board provides for the ongoing management of the HAMC through the office of the Housing Authority Executive Director.

The Board typically meets virtually on the fourth Wednesday of the month.

Meeting notices for the Board meetings are posted at the HAMC administrative building which is open to the public from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, except legal holidays, and on the HAMC website at https://maricopahousing.org. Such notice(s) will indicate the date, time, and place of meeting(s), and will include an agenda or information on how the public may obtain a copy of such an agenda. Agendas are available at least 24 hours prior to any meeting.
